A little bit of history These alcoholic blends trend starts back to the end of the nineteenth century in the United-States and in England. The ultimate recognition comes in the 20’s in the United States: cocktails become hugely popular since mixing another drink with contraband liquors allowed hiding the forbidden drink during the Prohibition era. Before the 70’s, most of the time cocktails contained rum, gin and whisky. But since the 80’s vodka is also used in the composition of this amazing mixture as an alternative to gin. Nowadays, this drinks family knows a huge diversity. Only home-made ones are considered ‘True’ cocktails. And those who are processed for commercial purposes are called ‘Premix’ drinks. Did you indeed know that ‘mixologist’ is an honorific title given to the barman who excels in the art of mixing? Similarly, in the world of gastronomy, the cocktails community has its own technical terminologies: you have maybe already heard the terms muddle, chill, frost, mix, shaken, build. No need to worry if you never heard of them, our recipes will be your guides! Easy or elaborate beverage recipes, or Soft Drinks Recipe (non-alcoholic), find your perfect cocktail on Goody! Cocktails Family Alcoholic Cocktails can be subdivided in two main categories:
- Long Drinks: they are usually what typically comes to our minds when we think about cocktails: these 12 to 25 cl cocktails are usually served in large glasses like the highball glass, the Martini glass, the Collins and large cocktail glasses with different foot shapes. They are drunk chilled with ice cubes or crushed ice. Below are some must-try legendary long-drinks recipes.
- Manhattan: The most famous whisky-based cocktail comes from New-York!
- Long Island: a concentrated blend of alcohols, so take it easy: equal volumes of Vodka, rum, tequila, gin, triple sec in a glass with some lemon juice.
- Bloody-Mary: Despite what its English name would suggest, this cocktail comes from Paris! The distinctive features of this vodka-based cocktail are its salty touch and red color with the tomato juice, the spices and the lemon juice.
- Dry Martini: 5/6 of gin and 1/6 of dry white vermouth, lemon zest and green olive. The long-thin stem and conical top of its glass is the iconic cocktail shape.
- Cuba Libre: Coca rum, lemon and cane sugar.
- Mojito: refreshing and convivial it is definitely the Cuban favorite of our evenings composed of white rum, brown sugar, lime and mint and sparkling water with crushed ice.
- Pina Colada: this sweet and creamy cocktail is made of rum, pineapple juice and coconut milk and cream
- Caipirinha: this Brazilian cocktail made of cachaça, brown sugar, mint leaves and lime was a real hit during the 2014 World Cup held in Brazil.
- Gin Tonic: as its name suggests, it is Gin and Tonic-based, with a very refreshing bittersweet flavor.
- Short drinks are 7 to 10 cl small drinks which can be drunk either at the beginning of the meal as an aperitif or at the end as digestive in small glasses. The most famous short drink is probably the shooter: a trendy and colorful drink that is drunk in a single shot. You also find Sours (with lemon juice), digestive liquor based also commonly called “After Dinner” or “Daisies” which are prepared in a shaker with alcohol, the juice of ½ a lemon, soda and a dash of grenadine syrup.
